It’s also an area with a remarkable history, from Blackbeard the Pirate to landmarks such as the Cape Lookout Lighthouse and a restored civil war facility at Fort Macon. Purple and gold spirit abounds in Eastern Carolina, with the East Carolina University Pirates in our backyard. ECU is the third largest university in North Carolina with an enrollment of roughly 29,000, and we cover the school and its sports with enthusiasm.
