Description:

About Gray Television: Gray Television supports local community interests by providing quality television broadcasting and exceptional service in each market we serve. Gray owns and/or operates television stations and leading digital properties in 93 television markets including the first or second highest rated television station in 85 markets. Our portfolio includes the number-one and/or number-two ranked television station operations in essentially all of our markets. We are an unmatched broadcast pioneer that keeps getting bigger and better. About KY3/KSPR: KY3 and KSPR are part of a seven-station group in Springfield, MO. KY3 is one of the most dominant NBC affiliates in the country, while KSPR is an up-and-coming ABC station. KYCW, the high-rated CW station, also broadcasts from the same studio, and the combined newsrooms produce newscasts for all three stations. KY3/KSPR covers 31 counties in southwest Missouri and northwest Arkansas and has four news gathering bureaus stationed throughout the DMA. KY3 and KSPR are known for their regional and national award winning local news, weather and sports coverage, large-scale and numerous community service projects, and effective broadcast and digital marketing solutions. We are proud of our close connections with the communities we serve in the Ozarks. Job Summary: KY3, the award-winning dominant number one station in the beautiful Ozark mountains is looking for a sports director to lead its sports department. This NBC affiliate also does sports for the ABC station (KSPR) and the Ozarks CW. We also have a weekly half-hour local high school sports show called the Ozone during the school year. We are looking for an aggressive sports director who is passionate about covering highly local and personalized sports stories. We also cover regional pro teams like the Kansas City Chiefs (and yes – last year’s Superbowl!) and college teams like Missouri State and Drury. We are a newsroom that values creativity. We need a sports director who can plan weekly operations of the sports department, supervise a three-person staff, and be able to daily go out into the community to shoot great sports stories. This is not an entry level position. We are looking for someone with at least three years’ experience at a television station as sports anchor. Candidate must be able to tell great stories about real people and not just go to games and get highlights. KY3 and KSPR have received more than 300 awards over the past few years, including the Edward R. Murrow regional and national awards for best newscast, Missouri Broadcast Association station of the year and the Kansas City Club station of the year (5 years in a row!). Your responsibilities will include the following: • Be able to “work” a touchscreen on-air smoothly • Be able to shoot, write, edit and voice personalized packages, sportscasts and highlights • Be able to put together and present several minutes of sports coverage daily • Be able to produce and plan a weekly half-hour sports show • Know (or be able to quickly learn) the local high school sports teams across our area • Be able to write in a clear, concise, conversational manner and must read through scripts thoroughly before going on-air • Report “live” on the scene, especially during sporting events or breaking sports news • Develop and maintain sports sources • Demonstrate sound sports coverage judgment, collaborate with others to present the story in the best way possible • Schedule, mentor, train and critique at least two sports staff members • Be able to ad-lib for hours during breaking sports or sporting events if needed • Enterprise sport stories • Be organized. Must plan all sports coverage • Attend/host/speak at community service, schools, and community events regularly (post-COVID); meet and greet viewers • Post and regularly update stories and other material on the website (including Ozone website) and social media per station requirements. Interaction with viewers on social media is a must, including the ability to do Facebook lives regularly • Communicate with the digital staff and other appropriate staff members during breaking sports news • Follow clothing and appearance guidelines set by the news director • Must be a visual storyteller; perform creative stand-ups and explanatory, moving live shots when needed. • Evenings, weekends, mornings and holidays will be required • Be willing to learn or possess a broad and working knowledge of the viewing area, including people, places, things, and history • Critique, feedback, and training are part of the job • Produce, anchor at least 15-30 minutes a day on OTT from the “Alert Desk” • Perform other job-related duties as assigned • Able to work independently with limited supervision • Work well in a team environment with ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving in a manner that will mesh well with co-workers, supervisors and viewers • Ability to meet tight deadlines and work well under pressure • Demonstrate solid news judgment and journalistic ethics • Maintain professional and ethical conduct at the station and in the community
