Position: President/CEO Address: 1201 Cumberland Crossing Drive, Valparaiso, Indiana The Valparaiso Family YMCA is an equal opportunity employer committed to valuing diversity and practicing inclusion. The Valparaiso Family YMCA has a commitment to creating a culture of safety. Originally formed as a club for students, the YMCA was located on the Valparaiso University campus but disbanded prior to the 1925 purchase of VU by the Lutheran University Association. Community youth programs restarted in 1946, and the first YMCA facility was built in 1951 in downtown Valparaiso. In 2009, the YMCA moved to a newly built 84,000 square foot building on the north side of Valparaiso. In 2017, a 7,000 square foot addition enabled the YMCA to offer personal training, physical therapy and ‘mind and body’ classes. Position Description and Board Expectations: The board believes its CEO should offer a background of efficient and effective leadership skills and a commitment to excellence in areas that are deemed critical to the growth and success of this YMCA. These critical skills include: Review and Implement Strategic Plans: Work effectively with volunteers, community leaders and key staff to implement strategies that address the needs of communities served by the Y. The 21st Century Plan (which identifies six strategic areas of focus) and an organizational assessment (prepared by the CEO of the Indiana Alliance of YMCAs) provide a framework for a plan. Those, coupled with your own review of the impact of the pandemic on the organization and an evaluation of opportunities in core programs, should result in a clear implementation plan with action items and measurable goals. Position the Y as a Vital Partner for Community Change: Serve as an ambassador for the mission, purpose, and vision for the YMCA within the community. Possess the ability to develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, while always upholding the highest standards and values of the Y. Ensure our Y is seen as a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community by connecting all people to their potential, purpose, and each other. Intentionally promote inclusion in all aspects, ensure and sustain diverse representation in our leadership, and lead social change in our communities through policies, words and actions. Manage Financial Performance and Ensure Post-Pandemic Recovery and Revitalization: Use high-level financial analysis to forecast financial trends, growth and stability, while consistently leading organization to balance or surplus operations by growing earned revenue and contributions and controlling costs. Empower and guide staff leaders to lead their departments to successful financial operation. Develop and implement stewardship strategies. Effectively guide the organization from the financial impact of the pandemic and develop a plan to retire debt. Build and Lead Staff: Ensure a talent development system is in place and executed to result in a culturally competent and effective staff team. Hire, motivate, nurture, retain, and hold staff accountable for key objectives. Work towards recruiting, retaining, developing and promoting staff that represent the diversity of the communities you serve. Encourage the team by creating a spirit of camaraderie, inclusion, and sense of mission and purpose. Create a learning organization to help staff achieve their highest potential. Salary Range: $120,000 - $150,000 Benefits: 80% employee premium coverage for medical, dental and vision insurance via robust United Healthcare offering (50% coverage for family portion.) Also included will be a YMCA-provided cell phone allowance, life insurance at two times annual salary, and long-term disability coverage. The Y currently participates in the Y Retirement Fund at an 8% YMCA contribution rate (once eligibility requirements are met). 403(b) retirement savings plan is also offered through the Y Retirement Fund. PTO is offered in the form of vacation time, sick time, holidays and floating holidays. PTO is accrued monthly with a degree of carry-over. Preferred Criteria: 1. Prior experience as a CEO. 2. YMCA Organizational Leader Certification. (Note: Candidates not already in possession of this certification have up to five years to obtain via Y-USA if hired prior to December 31, 2021.) 3. Experience with planned giving. 4. Experience in capital development and facility management, including debt reduction strategies. 5. A track record for building and leveraging community partnerships and alliances in order to expand services that address community needs. Valparaiso Family YMCA Association Facts: Our YMCA service area includes Porter County, Indiana alongside two other Ys, Portage and Duneland. Our service area is around 50,000 including the surrounding communities. The current strategic plan, titled 21st Century Plan, launched in 2020, has goals tied to serving childcare growth, Generation Z (Y members 8-23 years), Boomers (Y members 55+), Youth Mental Health, Substance Abuse, & Obesity. The Y currently serves around 12,500 members (5,900 units). Membership composition: Adults 18%, Seniors 40%, Youth 5%, Families 37%. Core programs include: childcare toddler through pre-kindergarten on-site and off-site, half-day preschool, school age child care at Y campus and rural schools, summer camps, year-round youth sports leagues and clinics, leisure and lap pools with infant through adult lessons, 120 fitness exercise classes/week. Valparaiso Family YMCA Features Include: The Y facility is 91,000 square feet. In addition, the Y rents 5,000 square feet in the former Y building (downtown, now owned by a church) for childcare and youth sports leagues. Main campus facility features include a gym, two pools, family locker room, spa area (sauna, steam whirlpool), wellness with cardio, Cybex, and free weight machines, yoga studio, Pilates studio, spin room, two exercise multi-purpose rooms, personal training center, running track, community room, meeting room. Also, a hospital partnership featuring a full-time nurse and on-site physical therapy lab. There is an outside playground and pavilion with acreage for camps and youth sports. The new Y was opened in 2009 and a 7,000 square foot addition housing personal training, physical therapy, yoga, Pilates and a board room was added in 2017. Staff & Board: The Y employs 30 FT and 275 PT/seasonal staff. The CEO has 6 direct reports including the HR Director, Director of Financial Management, Membership/Marketing Director, Childcare Director, Senior Director Programs & Facilities. Senior Director Financial Development. The Board is comprised of 24 individuals serving staggered 3-year terms. Composition includes: 40% women, average age approximately 45, two Hispanic members, and industries represented include legal, academia, insurance, both large and small corporate, medical, banking, construction, realty, financial management. The YMCA has almost 550 program volunteers. The bylaws were last revised in 2019. Financial Profile: Fiscal year is January 1 – December 31. Pre-COVID 2019 budget was $6.2 million, and the 2021 budget $4.6 million. $4.6 million debt remains from the 2008 capital campaign, with the current note maturing in 2025 for refinance. A separate Y Foundation has assets of $1.9 million and is managed by a volunteer committee. Additional funds are invested at the local community foundation, with a current value of about $200,000. Fundraising and Contributed Support: The Y raised $368,750 in unrestricted funds in 2020, and the 2021 unrestricted goal is $390,000. Estimated financial assistance to be awarded in 2021 is $360,000 across membership, childcare, camps, and programs (in 2020, 1,189 members received assistance). The 2006 capital campaign (for the new YMCA facility) raised $10.2 million including a $3 million lead gift, 16 acres and a $4.5 million gift tied to land lease. In 2010 the Y led a debt reduction campaign, which with matching funds, raised $1.2 million. Advantages to the Area: Located 50 miles southeast of Chicago and 15 miles south of Lake Michigan/Indiana Dunes, Valparaiso offers an amazing balance of amenities with access via a short commute to world class sports, museums and entertainment. It has an excellent parks system, a strong commitment to the arts, dynamic public/private partnerships, first-rate schools, high quality health care, national and independent retailers, and a vibrant and growing downtown. Valparaiso University and Ivy Tech State College-Northwest are in Valparaiso. Purdue University Northwest and Indiana University Northwest are located nearby. Valparaiso is the county seat, making it the center of activity in Porter County. Requirements:

Minimum Candidate Qualifications: 1. Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university. 2. Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission. 3. Minimum of five to seven years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff. 4. Fiscally sound business management approach and a proven track record of managing a budget of at least $2,000,000. 5. Experience and competence in the expectations identified for the position which were developed by the board, with staff and community leader input. 6. Experience working with people of diverse cultural backgrounds, affecting the overall diversity and makeup of the staff and the Board to reflect the community which the organization serves. 7. Experience with fundraising and annual campaigns. 8. Experience working with Board and volunteer leadership structure.
