Description:

About Gray: Gray Television supports local community interests by providing quality television broadcasting and exceptional service in each market we serve. We own and operate leading media outlets in over 50 markets throughout the country – all delivering the news, weather, sports and entertainment that millions of our neighbors count on every day. We are an unmatched broadcast pioneer that keeps getting bigger and better. We constantly strive for excellence. Through upgrading to the latest technology and seeking new ways to stay on top in our markets, we focus on training and development of the best and brightest employees in the business. About KALB: KALB-TV is the No. 1 television station in the region of Central Louisiana. Our market comprises four primary parishes (counties), including Rapides, Avoyelles, Vernon, and Grant. We are located in Alexandria, Louisiana, a community of nearly 50,000 people right in the heart of the state. Across the Red River is the community of Pineville, which boasts an additional 15,000. Alexandria may be market 179, but there is nothing small about our approach to news. KALB-TV includes the traditional NBC (News Channel 5) that has dominated the market for nearly 60 years, CBS-2, and the CW Cenla - Cenla, by the way, is short for Central Louisiana. Each weekday, KALB produces 6 ½ hours of news, and each newscast is the dominant No. 1 in its time slot. Our team is comprised of several veterans who have worked in this market for many years as well as those first entering the business. We are proud of our track record of talent that has gone on to larger markets, especially those who have stayed in Gray Television. As for Alexandria, we have a true advantage of being in the center of the state. This means we are just three hours from New Orleans and two hours or less from every other major city in the state, including Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Monroe and Shreveport. Alexandria has a proud military tradition and is the location of the former England Air Force Base (now England AirPark) and just 45 miles from Fort Polk and the Joint Readiness Training Center, a key training facility for the U.S. Army. Alexandria International Airport has connecting flights to Atlanta, Houston and Dallas on a daily basis. Alexandria is the home of LSU-Alexandria, one of the premiere athletic programs in NAIA, and Pineville has been the home of Louisiana College for more than 100 years. “LC” as it is known is a liberal arts Christian college. Job Summary: In this position, you will serve as the part-time producer for our “Weekend Edition” newscasts that air at 6 and 10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays at 10 p.m. The ideal candidate would be a self-professed “news junkie” who stays up to date on the latest stories, but also understands the changing media world in which many of our viewers have some knowledge of stories even before they sit down to watch us. That’s why we are looking for someone who will have fresh ideas and bring energy and excitement to the news gathering process that includes an emphasis on what people want to watch. This includes crafting a compelling rundown with fresh, relevant story ideas, and an emphasis on local content and coverage. Knowledge of current events, solid news judgment and excellent writing skills are a must. Spelling bee and grammar champs wanted for this position! Experience with non-linear editing systems and the ENPS news system preferred, but we are willing to train. This is a great opportunity for an aspiring broadcast journalist wanting to break into the business, and while it would be nice, previous experience is not 100% necessary. This is an ideal position for an excellent writer who enjoys working behind-the-scenes in a live, television news environment. Responsibilities include, but not limited to: • Assist weekend anchor team in compiling news for 6 and 10 p.m. shows on Saturday and 10 p.m. on Sunday • Select stories from national news feeds and Gray TV’s news feed system • Select stories from state and national news wires as well as from other Gray TV stations, especially in the state of Louisiana • Prepare scripts by adding text, graphics and video • Write and edit headlines and teases • Run teleprompter for anchors during newscasts • Assist in contributing content to the KALB website and social media • Answer phone calls as well as emails and messages from viewers on social media • Being prompt, committed and dependable

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications preferred, although similar degrees will be considered. Will consider students working toward a degree • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively • Ability to edit video (or be trained) on non-linear systems such as Edius • A growing sense of news judgment • Knowledge of local, state and national current events, newsmakers, and issues • Ability to put together a dynamic news rundown presentation • Good news writing and copy editing ability for all platforms including social media – the ability to post to www.kalb.com and KALB’s Twitter and Facebook accounts is required • Knowledge of libel laws and ethical foundations of journalism • Maintain professional personal appearance as defined by KALB-TV management • Ability to work cooperatively with others to create a sense of teamwork in the presentation of news and other programming • Ability to think quickly and respond appropriately in high pressure situations • Valid driver’s license with good driving record • Ability to lift, carry and maneuver up to 20 lbs. • Ability to work in all weather conditions • Flexibility to work any assigned shift *MUST be able to pass an entry-level drug screening Please apply online: https://gray.tv/careers#currentopenings
