Job Title: Deli Steward Reports to: Deli Lead Status: Hourly/Non-Exempt Schedule: Varied Overview: The Deli Steward is responsible for providing outstanding customer service while maintaining efficient and accurate stocking, cleaning, and rotation of product. They are self-motivated and carry a sense of ownership for the department including safe food handling practices. They provide leadership and training to other members of the deli in exceptional customer service and must be able to work a variety of shifts within the Deli and have flexibility with shift needs. Job Functions: Daily Responsibilities • Engages customers and develops relationships to providing exceptional customer service. • Operates slicer, wrapping and cooking equipment. • Prepares fresh “grab and go meals” while adhering to strict company portions and guidelines. • Replenishes “grab and go” program including fresh soup, sandwiches, salad & yogurt bar. • Performs food prep duties and monitors food rotation. • Contributes to the organization being financially fit in order to grow the business and benefit our communities. • Assists Deli Manager as needed. • Answers phones and takes special orders. • Embraces organization, efficiencies and maintains a clean work-space. • Practices open, positive communication and conflict resolution with co-workers. • Observes shift operating hours at all times as scheduled. Quality & Safety Standards • Maintains integrity of in-house quality, wholesome, fresh and value added products while helping the department meet margin goals. • Addresses food safety concerns immediately with regard to the products in the department, equipment and food health concerns. • Maintains equipment and supplies. • Observes the regular HAACP and temperature logs within coolers and cases and immediately reports failures to store management. • Follows quality control and rotation guidelines. • Maintains compost and recycling practices.

Requirements:

Qualifications and Experience: • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in the retail grocery industry. • Proven leadership, communication and collaboration skills. • Demonstrates interest in researching trends and best practices to provide education and efficiencies for improved results that challenges standard practices. • Values community, sustainability, passion for food and fun. • Experience with start-up business “outside the box” thinking and innovation as well as nutrition knowledge a plus. • Ability to travel regularly throughout the Portland area (mileage reimbursed). Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a staff member to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. • Regularly lift up to 50 pounds with or without assistance. • Regularly working in areas that can be wet and slippery. • Regularly required to stand, bend, climb and reach. • Repetitive arm and hand movements, manual dexterity to wrap, package and stock product up to 30 pounds. • Requires standing for prolonged periods of time, walking, and climbing on a step stool. • Exposure to extreme temperature changes. • Requires vision for working with sharp knives, slicer, box cutter and related equipment will need to determine spoiled or damaged product.
