Description:

The Meat & Seafood Steward is responsible for providing a high level of customer service and practicing safe food handling practices. This position receives, stores, and grinds meat and seafood. They unload and transport fresh meat and seafood and count and weigh incoming articles to compare against invoices. They examine all meat and seafood to ensure freshness and integrity and from receiving to storage to final sale. They rotate proteins to ensure freshness of product life. They maintain meat and seafood programs including product handling and presentation. They help strengthen vendor partnerships though continual education and understanding of the entire chain from land preservation, animal welfare conditions, animal treatment and butchery to sourcing and distribution. The Meat & Seafood Steward processes meat and seafood according to department cutting lists, goals and standards to maximize sales and gross profit.

Requirements:

• Minimum of one (1) year of experience in meat & seafood selling and cutting in the retail grocery industry. • Knowledge of animal welfare, sourcing and processing practices • Proven leadership, communication and collaboration skills. • Values community, sustainability, passion for food and fun. • Experience with start-up business “outside the box” thinking and innovation as well as nutrition knowledge a plus. • Ability to travel regularly throughout the Portland area (mileage reimbursed).
